「～と～の違い」という日本語を英語で表す際に、正しい用法である”difference between … of …”に対して、誤用である”difference of … between …”という表現が、日本人の中で多く用いられています。

 

今回も、何度も引用している「科学論文の英語用法百科（第1編）」を参照して、この問題についてまとめていきたいと思います。

 

difference of/difference in/difference betweenの違い

この問題に切り込んで行く前に、「～の違い」を意味する3つの英語である、”difference of”と”difference in”と”difference between”の3種類の違いについて、おさらいしておきましょう。

①difference ofの意味

difference ofにはいくつの用法があって、その中でも使用頻度が高いのは、以下の5種類です。

(1) There is a difference of approximately 1.2 MeV between the two predictions.

(2) The difference of precision for these two methods is negligible. 

(3) The difference of the present approach is that it does not rely on the integrability of F.

(4) This is simply a difference of theory and application.

(5) The difference of the functions f₁ and f₂ is written Δf.

 

(5)は少し違いますが、基本的にdifference of A and Bという対比で表されるのは、抽象的な比較です。ので、より具体的なものを比較する際にdifference ofを用いるのは、一般的ではありません（なお、(5)の例においてdifferenceが意味しているのは、「違い」というよりも（数学的な意味での）「差」です）。

 

②difference inの意味

difference inの用法は主に2つあって、それぞれを表すと

(6) For these two approaches there is a fundamental difference in the role of the operator τ.

(7) The small difference in the value of α is unimportant.

(6)の”difference in”は(2)の”difference of”と同じ意味を持っていて、一般的に、比較の対象を指摘する役割を果たす場合には、difference ofとdifference inは互換的に用いることができます。また、(7)の用法では、”difference in”は”change in”と同義で、これは次の用例でも同じ意味で用いられています。

(8) This change leads to a small difference in the neutrino sector.

 

③difference betweenの意味

difference betweenの用法は通常1つだけで、その用法は以下の文で例示されます。

(9) The most significant difference between these equations is that in (1.2) the gradient in the second term on the left-hand side acts only on Φ, while in (4.3) it acts on both Φ and Ψ.

“difference between”は、”difference of”の反対で、特定の具体的な違いに対して使用されます（つまり、”difference between”のほうが”difference of”よりも、使用頻度は多くなる傾向にあります）。

 

さて、これら3つの違いを踏まえて、”difference between … of …”と、”difference of … between ..”の違いについて考えていきましょう。

 

difference between … of …と difference of … between …

まずは、誤用例を挙げます。

[1] The difference of the contributions between the adiabatic and isocurvature fluctuations is significant in this regime.

続いて、正しい用法です。

(1) The difference between the contributions of adiabatic and isocurvature fluctuations is significant in this regime.

 

端的に言うと、間違いである[1]の例では、”difference of”が上記①で説明した用法である、と解釈される恐れがあります。つまり、[1]の表現では、比較対象がadiabatic fluctuationとisocurvature fluctuationで、その違いがcontributionである、という解釈になって、意味不明になります。

一方、(1)の表現だと比較対象がcontributions of adiabatic fluctuationと、contributions of isocurvature fluctuationという風に解釈されるため、これら二つの揺らぎがどのように寄与しているのかの違いを、正しく表現できていることになります。

 

これらの違いを分かりやすくまとめると、

difference of A between B and C

という表現では、「比較対象がBとCであり、その違いはAである（又はAに関する）」という意味になる一方で、

difference between A of B and C

という表現では、「BのAとCのAが異なる（比較の対象となっているのはA）」という意味を表しています。

 

本来、後者の意味を表したいのに、前者の表現を間違って用いてしまっていることが多いようです。

 

他にも、「科学論文～」で挙げられている例をいくつか紹介しておきます。

[2] The difference of the predictions between the theory we propose and that of Blair et al. is significant.

(2) The difference between the predictions of the theory we propose and the theory of Blair et al. is significant.

[3] The difference of the amplitudes between the isospin 3/2 and 1/2 channels grows as α approaches 1.

(3) The difference between the amplitudes of the isospin 3/2 and 1/2 channels grows as α approaches 1.

[4] The difference of the merging process between case 1 and case 2 can be understood as follows.

(4) The difference between the merging processes of case 1 and case 2 can be understood as follows.

[5] The difference of the calcium sensitivity between the above cationic channel and the AHP channel can be used effectively.

(5) The difference between the calcium sensitivities of the above cationic channel and the AHP channel can be used effectively.

 

 

これらの用法の違いを理解することで、日本語で書かれた明細書の意味をより厳密に英語で表現できるようになるのではないか、と思われます。
